The Town That Votes Together

Ballot Room at The BalsamsAt precisely midnight on January 27, 2004, every registered voter in Dixville Notch, New Hampshire, will cast a vote in the nation's first presidential primary of the 2004 election campaign. How can Dixville Notch guarantee that all voters will be present and accounted for at the stroke of midnight? Well, for starters, there are only 26 of them. Read on to learn more about Dixville Notch's unique voting tradition. I'll also tell you how you can visit the famous Ballot Room at The Balsams Grand Resort Hotel in Dixville Notch. Update: CNN reports this morning that Gen. Wesley Clark won the vote in Dixville Notch's Democratic Primary with eight votes. Sen. John Kerry had three votes, Sen. John Edwards received two votes and Sen. Joe Lieberman and former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean each managed one vote. President Bush, who was unopposed in the Republican Primary, received 11 votes.
